Kate Middleton might be preparing for another tiara moment — and it could happen soon.

The Princess of Wales, 43, has had two tiara moments so far this year, and Buckingham Palace previously hinted at when the next occasion requiring the royal accessory might be.

In October, the palace announced that President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany accepted King Charles' invitation for a state visit to the U.K., in a trip that will run from Wednesday, Dec. 3 to Friday, Dec. 5.

State visits are an important way for the British royals to maintain relationships with representatives of foreign nations, and the first day of the official trips is typically capped with a state banquet, where tiaras are traditional attire for the royal women.

Though the British royal family is famous for its tiara collection, women in the family don't actually wear them very often. They typically only don the headtoppers for weddings or events of the utmost formality.

Princess Kate slipped on Queen Mary's Lover's Knot Tiara, the most frequently worn tiara in her rotation, for her two tiara wears earlier this year. The Princess of Wales shimmered in the historic headpiece for the French state banquet at Windsor Castle in July and wore it again for the September state banquet at the castle commemorating U.S. President Donald Trump's state visit to the U.K.

Chris Hemsworth uses 'reminiscence therapy' to help his dad's Alzheimer's

Chris Hemsworth's new documentary, "A Road Trip to Remember," takes viewers on a motorbike adventure around Melbourne and Australia's Northern Territory. His costar and father, 71-year-old Craig Hemsworth, is right alongside him through the dirt and rocky terrain, despite living with early stage Alzheimer's disease. Chris Hemsworth has a genetic predisposition to the disease.

"I feel I've been so busy, I probably haven't spent as much time with my dad as I would want to," Hemsworth says at the start of the film.

"Any chance to spend time with my dad is special, but this road trip back in time was particularly meaningful for us both," Chris Hemsworth wrote on Instagram about his new documentary, "A Road Trip to Remember," which premieres on Nov. 23 on National Geographic.

Along the way, Hemsworth attempts to "supersize" reminiscence therapy for his dad by stopping at his childhood home and meeting up with old friends. USA TODAY spoke with medical professionals familiar with reminiscence therapy to find out more about what it is, how it works and how families can use it with their loved ones who have dementia.

What is reminiscence therapy?

Reminiscence therapy is an intervention that focuses on memories through sensory tools like music, photographs, smells and places, says Dr. Sikandar Khan, associate director of Indiana University's Center for Aging Research at Regenstrief Institute.

In the film, psychologist Suraj Samtani suggests reminiscence therapy as a way to help Hemsworth's father.

Just like physical workouts can build stronger biceps and glutes, brain exercises − and specifically memory exercises prompted by places, sounds and objects from the past − can help boost cognition, Samtani says.

In the film, Hemsworth explains that while Alzheimer's destroys the connections between brain cells and disrupts memory networks, reminiscence therapy builds back those connections through multisensory experiences.

"Seeing, touching and hearing our past can make it easier to remember," Hemsworth says.

It's about recreating a feeling, Khan says. "It jogs one's memory, how one felt at a certain time."

'A step back in time.'

In the documentary, Hemsworth takes reminiscence therapy to another level for his father by staging the Melbourne home they lived in together when Chris Hemsworth was a kid in the 1990s.

"It's a step back in time," Craig Hemsworth says as he steps into his old home, set up with identical furnishings, photographs and knickknacks from when he lived there.

"I think my dad got a lot out of today," Hemsworth says in the film. "The experience of coming back to our old house in Melbourne has stimulated nostalgia and triggered memories. It feels like there's been a real benefit."

Most people can't replicate an old home like Hemsworth did. But you don't have to, Samtani says, to get the same effect. Listening to old songs, looking at old photographs or watching family home videos with a loved one who has dementia is reminiscence therapy, Samtani says. "It's quite simple to do."

Hollie Lowe, a counselor and dementia care specialist with the James L. West Center for Dementia Care in Fort Worth, Texas, uses reminiscence therapy daily with her patients.

A dementia patient's brain is slowly dying, Lowe explains. With Alzheimer's, specifically, plaque is growing on the brain. Because those brain cells are dying, they are unlearning things and going back in time. Reminiscence therapy meets them where they are.

"It's going to their world," Lowe says. "We're not trying to bring them to the present, we're going to the past. Because they can't come to the present."

It's unclear yet if reminiscence therapy delays dementia, Khan says, but it certainly promotes a sense of calm and reduces stress and anxiety in dementia patients.

How to use reminiscence therapy

Lowe suggests making memory boxes. Place a few objects that relate to the same topic, like cooking, in a box. With the patient, you can look through the box, smell the spices, hold the whisk and talk about cooking and favorite recipes together.

Use your loved one's life story, Lowe says. "If they played a harmonica, put a harmonica in the box. What kind of toy did they play with (as a child)?"

Developers are beginning to use artificial intelligence to facilitate reminiscence therapy, Khan says. He's starting trials using virtual reality with patients who are at high risk for dementia.

There are also chatbots who can help jog patients' memories. NewDays, a startup, has a clinician-monitored AI tool for dementia patients in Washington, California, Texas and Florida. The AI companion, Sunny, asks patients questions and prompts storytelling and memory exercises through conversation and photographs.

"The goal is not really to substitute human interaction. The goal is to, as much as possible, empower the person to practice and build confidence and have more human interaction," says Babak Parviz, NewDays founder and CEO.

Andrea Pidgeon's 82-year-old mother, Tanna Jean Pidgeon, started using Sunny after she was diagnosed with dementia in July.

"The older she gets, the more of an introvert she becomes," Andrea Pidgeon says. "With Sunny, it's been amazing because it stimulates her and it keeps her going."

Other ways to promote brain health

In the documentary, Samtani also tells Hemsworth that social connection is essential to brain health and can slow cognitive decline.

"Social connections, for us, is like sunshine. Without that sunshine, we whither," Samtani says.

Community engagement is key for those with dementia, Samtani says. He suggests volunteering, joining a singing group or taking a walk with new friends.

Keira Knightley can't stop drawing old men.

The *Pride and Prejudice* star explained her unusual habit in a new interview, revealing how sketching is part of her process for memorizing dialogue for movie and TV projects.

"I've always loved drawing," Knightley told *The Guardian*. "I draw when I learn my lines. They're normally old men's faces with very detailed lines. For some reason — I think it's because I'm dyslexic — so I have to get the words off the page as quickly as possible."

The *Atonement* actress said she reads the entire script aloud and studies the material as an audio file. "I record the whole script, then listen to it while doing these quite intricate drawings to get the lines into my head," she explained. "I get into a really meditative state, which I love. My scripts are full of pictures of old men's faces."

Knightley added that her loved ones have noticed her sketching tendencies, and they sometimes provide her with material for her next portrait.

"Now that my husband and friends know I do it, they collect pictures of old men's faces to give me," she said, noting that she doesn't think she'd fare well with a live subject. "I don't think I'd like to go on Sky's Portrait Artist of the Year, because then I couldn't learn my lines. If I've got some dude sitting in the room, that wouldn't work at all."

The *Pirates of the Caribbean* actress recently published a picture book for children, titled *I Love You Just the Same*, which she illustrated herself. The book came about as the result of a bedtime routine with her daughter.

"My oldest child does not particularly like sleeping," she recalled in an interview with *This Morning* last month. "I would say to her, 'Okay, what drawing would you like?' And she would say, 'Can you draw me a bird? Can you draw me a person? Can I be in it?' And then she'd go to sleep, and when she'd wake up, there'd be a drawing for her. And so she knew that when she was asleep, I'd been thinking about her because she would get really anxious in the middle of the night."

After several months of this routine, Knightley had an overwhelming number of drawings.

"I had all of these images, and I thought, 'Oh, well I'll try and put them together for her,' and in the classic five-and-a-half-year-old way, she went, 'But they're not in color, and I don't want them if they're not in color,'" she recalled. "So I put them aside, and then a while later tried to color some of them in and I thought, 'Ooh, I wonder if there's a bit of a story out of it,' and it sort of came from there."**

- *Wicked: For Good* director Jon M. Chu knew the stage blocking for "As Long as You're Mine" wouldn't translate well to the big screen.

- The filmmaker details how moments in rehearsal with Jonathan Bailey and Cynthia Erivo led to some of the film's most touching romantic moments between Fiyero and Elphaba.

- Chu credits Erivo with the idea that Elphaba would have a cozy "nest" that allowed her some "dignity."

Fans of the *Wicked* stage musical know the "As Long as You're Mine" staging well: Elphaba and Fiyero kneeling and wailing right into each other's faces for 3 minutes and 46 seconds. It's a steamy and intimate performance as the two finally act on their long-simmering chemistry.

*Wicked: For Good* director Jon M. Chu knew that wouldn't work on the big screen, and opted for his Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) to take a more demure approach (including one fantastically cozy sweater robe).

"I just felt like, 'Is this movie the type of movie where you just sit and stare at each other and sing?' I was like, 'There's nothing happening,'" Chu tells **. "And passion can only happen.... They didn't have time to.... We need a scene where they go out on a date or something. *How do they know each other?*"

The director says his thinking led to long conversations with Bailey: "It was about 'What do you see that's beautiful about her? She cracked your brain open in movie one, and you've been living in this lie. You've been watching her have this beautiful confidence that you don't have. What happens when you go to her nest?'"

'Wicked: For Good' ending explained: It was almost 'a lot darker and scarier,' says director

'Wicked: For Good' director reveals secret note Fiyero sent Elphaba that explains surprise ending

L to R: Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba and Jonathan Bailey is Fiyero in WICKED FOR GOOD, directed by Jon M. Chu.

Chu says he and Bailey posited that Fiyero would "look at her at nest and see how beautiful of a place she made. That's something Cynthia brought to this character that none of us were thinking: dignity. She's like, 'I would have a home, I would make it smell nice. I would put my hair up.' She's not just a caricature that we're making fun of in learning the backstory. It's not fan fiction; this is a real character to her."

In rehearsals, Bailey improvised the moment before the song starts when Fiyero takes off Elphaba's cape.

"He was like, 'I want to take off her cape so she can feel what it feels like to let go,'" Chu recalls of the rehearsal. "And this moment was way longer than what they did in the film. I mean, it was f---ing 20 minutes. They just stared at each other."

Chu recognizes the dissonance of choosing to have Elphaba sing the "aggressive" opening lyric, "Kiss me too fiercely," while actually distancing herself from Fiyero, "But I need somewhere to go. So what if that was her *wish* and her *dream*, but she wasn't sure he was there yet? And what if we got to the point where then he looked at her and looked at even the propaganda that paints her as ugly and evil, and can't believe that she still loves and knows herself? He cannot do that. It's not about him being in love with her, it's about him respecting her at a level that he cannot be alive in the way she's alive."

The director believes the moment where Bailey walks to Elphaba after telling her she's beautiful is "Jonny at his best."

L to R: Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba and Jonathan Bailey is Fiyero in WICKED FOR GOOD, directed by Jon M. Chu.

Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) in 'Wicked: For Good'.

"And then he gets down on his knees — and she's not on her knees yet — but he gets down and he says, 'I'm not lying.' And then, this again was Cynthia, she responds with a defense mechanism: 'What the f--- are you talking about?' And then he says he's just looking at things a different way. To me, that is earning the moment. That makes it more intimate and sensual, not sexual. And I think that's when you fall for their love. That to me is more sexy than anything else."

"And then he brings her outside, and now they can play," he continues. "She smiles for the first time, and they're singing together. And that's again, Cynthia just finding that right moment: When he says 'falling under your spell,' she laughs, because he's doing this little thing with his eyes and he's making her laugh."

The song concludes with the couple embracing as Elphaba levitates them into the air.

"Like a Warner Bros. cartoon, they fly in the air when they're in love," says Chu. "And then, just as you're almost getting so far away from two people on their knees, you land with them on their knees, together."

Floating like Superman and Lois could have been cheesy, but Chu credits Bailey for playing the moment just right.

"It's a tricky one because you're like, 'How big do you make his reaction of *Whoa, how'd you do that?* But he's such a good actor. That was the relief, I could just throw crazy ideas at them and they would find the truth in it."

*Saturday Night Live* is giving fans a chance to catch up on season 51 as it takes a brief hiatus.

The legendary NBC sketch show is airing reruns of earlier episodes before it closes out 2025 with three star-studded installments in a row in December.

The network previously announced that tonight's episode would be a repeat of the Oct. 4 season premiere hosted by Bad Bunny with musical guest Doja Cat and special appearances by Jon Hamm and *KPop Demon Hunters *singers Rei Ami, Ejae, Audrey Nuna. It also marked the debut of *SNL'*s five new featured players, Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Ben Marshall, Kam Patterson, and Veronika Slowikowska. But make sure to check local listings as college football may preempt things.

On Wednesday, Nov. 26, catch *A Saturday Night Live Thanksgiving* special highlighting memorable Turkey Day-themed sketches from years past, airing from 9-11 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, and streaming the next day on Peacock.

There will be another repeat episode on Saturday, Nov. 29, as the cast and crew enjoys the chance to celebrate with their loved ones.**

*SNL *will return with a new episode on Saturday, Dec. 6, with fan-favorite host Melissa McCarthy, joined by singer-songwriter Dijon as musical guest. The *Bridesmaids *star has earned an Emmy nomination for each of her five previous episodes, winning for her most recent appearance in 2017. She also memorably popped up a handful of times to play former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

Following McCarthy is host Josh O'Connor (*The Crown*)* *with musical guest Lily Allen on Saturday, Dec. 13. O'Connor will be on to support his turn as a hot priest in *Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, *which will be hitting Netflix that weekend. Meanwhile, Allen will be performing songs from her David Harbour divorce album, *West End Girl*, so don't hold your breath for a cameo from the *Stranger Things *cast that week.**

Then, the final episode of the year will be fronted by the powerhouse duo of host Ariana Grande and musical guest Cher. The *Wicked: For Good* star — currently recovering from Covid — has hosted *SNL* twice previously, including once doing double duty as musical guest, plus two additional stints as a solo musical performer. But for this episode, she'll be handing over music duties to the one and only Cher.

The Oscar winner last sang on the Studio 8H stage in her *SNL* debut on Nov. 21, 1987, although she did perform "If I Could Turn Back Time" during *SNL50: The Homecoming Concert *at Radio City Music Hall in February. **

Previous episodes this season have been fronted by *SNL* alum Amy Poehler, with cameos from her former costars Tina Fey and Seth Meyers; Sabrina Carpenter doubling as her own musical guest; *Eternity* actor Miles Teller; comedian Nikki Glaser; and *The Running Man* star Glen Powell.

Season 51 also saw the departures of cast members Ego Nwodim, Heidi Gardner, Devon Walker, Michael Longfellow, and Emil Wakim.

"That show was my longest relationship ever," Nwodim said on a recent episode of *Sherri.* "I started to get the seven-year itch and I'm like, we don't have kids, I'm gonna see other people!"

She also reflected on her departure leaving the show without any Black female cast members. "I felt honored to be the seventh Black woman in that cast," she said. "I hope that there will be more Black women. Punkie Johnson came on the show after me. Who knows who else they'll find as they explore and seek out other talents, but I felt honored to represent for us."**

- *Wicked: For Good *soared past expectations for a stunning $150 million debut at the domestic box office this weekend, and $226 million abroad.

- Those figures exceed those of its 2024 predecessor by leaps and bounds, and earn the film several new box office records, including biggest-ever open for a Broadway adaptation.

- Next weekend, *Wicked: For Good *will have to tussle with *Zootopia 2*, formidable competition in the family film arena.

These are no delusions of grandeur — the weekend box office is truly unlimited!

*Wicked: For Good*, the eagerly anticipated sequel to 2024's blockbuster breakout musical adaptation *Wicked*, finally touched its bubble down for a thrillifying premiere. The *Wizard of Oz *riff that was over two decades in the making earned $150 million at the domestic box office and $226 million abroad, per Comscore.

Releasing in an enormous 4,115 theaters around the country didn't hinder its first impression, as we've seen with other recently releases, like Sydney Sweeney's boxing biopic *Christy, *which broke its own box office records in the other direction. Rather, Universal's strategy to flood the zone turned up a per-theater-average of $36,452, one of the best of the year thus far.

*For Good*'s opening figures throw a pail of ice-cold water on *Wicked*'s opening performance, too, which scared up $114 million domestically and $164.2 million worldwide.

The sequel broke several records with its much-needed box office win at an otherwise listless Q4. *For Good* has officially earned the titles of biggest opening for a Broadway adaptation in box office history, biggest opening ever for a musical at the November box office, and the biggest opening figures for its stars, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, director Jon M. Chu, composer Stephen Schwartz, and producer Marc Platt.

One record *For Good *couldn't manage to break, however, was best premiere of 2025. *A Minecraft Movie *still clings to that sash, having opened to* *$157 million in April.

Where Glinda and Elphaba fly from here isn't as certain as *For Good*'s opening dominance was. The film has earned a rave 95 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and currently holds an A on Cinemascore, but critics were largely divided on the film's quality, with some penning outright pans. Still, the film certainly has a good chance at going the distance to become the highest-grossing film at the domestic and even perhaps global box office this year.

How 'Wicked: For Good' changed after first movie's success: 'We don't need any of that s---'

How Ke Huy Quan brought his post-Oscar joy to 'goofy' Gary De'Snake in 'Zootopia 2' (exclusive)

It's hard at first to assess the rest of *For Good*'s box office competition after its fearsome takeoff kicked up a storm of dust. But it isn't all bad news.

Last week's gold medal winner, *Now You See Me: Now You Don't*, dropped a not great, but not awful 57 percent from its $21.3 million domestic open with a $9.1 million week 2 take. That lands it in the No. 2 spot domestically with a $36.8 million overall gross and an impressive $146.2 million globally. *Predator: Badlands*, another IP heavy-hitter, proved its endurance with a $6.2 million week 3 haul, to make $76.8 million domestically and $159.5 million globally overall. That already vaults it over five films in the expansive franchise, where it sits poised, just $4 million behind 2004's *Alien vs. Predator*, to become the series' highest-grossing film.

Two premieres that dared to go up against *For Good *got exactly what they bargained for: meager returns. The Brendan Fraser-led cross-cultural comedy *Rental Family *earned the No. 5 spot with a $3.3 million opening. Though Searchlight hasn't released a budgetary estimate, the small-scale picture was likely a modest enough production to be satisfied by that opening performance. Following *Rental Family *is the war thriller sequel *Sisu: Road to Revenge*, which earned $2.6 million in weekend 1.

If it were any other new release from the last two months on the calendar coming up next weekend to challenge *For Good*, the bout could be called right now in Chu, Erivo, and Grande's favor. But next week's big premiere has been marked for success since its conception.

*Zootopia 2 *is set to unleash the beasts at home and abroad on Friday. Though 2016's franchise starter only earned $75 million in its premiere weekend, the prospect of a family film entering the ring ought to be a startling one for Universal. *For Good *is a much darker picture of Oz than what audiences glimpsed in *Wicked*, meaning parents may be more inclined to take their kids to *Zootopia 2*, especially considering the recent dearth of family films in theaters.

And if neither animated animal detectives or dueling witch besties appeal to you, there's a third way: Also opening on Friday is* Eternity*, a classic Hollywood love triangle romcom with a spiritual twist, starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner.

Sister Wives star Kody Brown made a bold claim about a "cheating wife" in a new Season 20 mid-season trailer.

On Sunday, Nov. 23, TLC dropped a new teaser for the second half of the season, promising plenty of drama to come.

In the trailer, first revealed by People, Kody explained to his wife, Robyn Brown, his intention to apologize to his three ex-wives, Christine Brown, Janelle Brown and Meri Brown.

"After that whole experience in Coyote Pass, I want to set them free," he said of the drama-filled property they recently sold in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Meanwhile, Christine told her husband, David Woolley, that Kody "wants to extend an olive branch," adding, "I what the motive is." She later admitted to producers, "I don't have a lot of trust with Kody."

"I am walking into an environment where trust has been killed," Kody told producers before meeting with Christine and David. He then warned the couple, "Suck those beers down because I got some fun stuff to share with you."

After Kody told Christine he was sorry "for saying I didn't love you," Christine pointed out to producers, "This is my husband here. Why do you think this is appropriate?"

Janelle, meanwhile, simply said, "Wow," when Kody expressed his desire to apologize. In another scene, Janelle toasted with her friends, as one of them said, "He's to Janelle getting a new man."

Spoiler alert: The apology didn't go well with Meri, either. Meri also introduced a romantic prospect, Ron, declaring to him in a clip that she was "so happy" to spend time with him.

In a different scene, Robyn said to Kody, "We've had a hard run," to which he replied, "I think I owe you an apology." Another quick clip featured Robyn tearing up as she confessed, "I do not agree with things that he does. I do not agree with his attitudes."

Near the end of the trailer, one-on-one host Sukanya "Suki" Krishnan told Christine that Kody said he "regrets not apologizing for saying that you were not attractive."

"That makes me mad," Christine replied. "If he ever says that to me, I will become unglued."

TLC also teased more conversations about a failed Coyote Pass deal involving a non-disclosure that Meri turned down.

To conclude the mid-season trailer, Kody yelled in the tell-all with Suki, "Your wife's having an affair, and your other wife tells you! That's my business!"

Catch new episodes of Sister Wives on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC and streaming the next day on HBO Max.

Ethan Slater just made a rare comment about his girlfriend and Wicked: For Good co-star Ariana Grande.

During a recent interview with E! News promoting the film, the actor praised his girlfriend's talent as both an actress and singer.

"Now it's so crazy, because in Hollywood, they say that actresses want to be singers and singers want to be actresses," the interviewer said to Slater and co-star Marissa Bode. "And Ariana Grande is in this film."

After hearing that, Slater politely clarified that Grande is not a singer-turned-actress or actress-turned-singer — but in a different category entirely.

"She's incredible but she's not a singer who wants to be an actress, or an actress who wants to be a singer. She's just the best at both," he said.

Grande and Slater first met on the set of Wicked in 2022 and their relationship became public in July 2023. At the time, the pair faced intense public scrutiny, as both actors had recently separated from their spouses.

Recently, rumors spread that the two had split after they were seen not standing next to each other as the Wicked cast posed for their cast photo at their London premiere. However, TMZ confirmed the Slater and Grande are still together, but are keeping their relationship private.

During an interview with Extra at the New York premiere on Monday, Nov. 17, Slater again praised Grande's performance when asked about her and Cynthia Erivo.

"Everybody in it, present company excluded, is just so unbelievable," he said. "Ariana's performance is out of this world. Cynthia's performance in unbelievable."

Wicked: For Good is now showing in U.S. theaters.

Shedeur 1, Haters 0. Sanders had answer for every NFL draft snub

What a scrapbook memory for Shedeur Sanders. Coach Prime came to witness his son's first NFL start. A suspect Raiders defense played along. Myles Garrett was there on his side. And how.

Lights. Camera. Action.

When it was over, after the NFL's highest-profiled rookie – fifth-round draft status or not – came out as a winner with the Cleveland Browns he flashed his million-watt smile and essentially said he told you so.

"Hopefully, we cleared a little stuff up," Sanders said after the 24-10 victory in Las Vegas on Sunday. "But we have a long way to go, a long way to grow. I know it's only one way. And the only way is up."

That bit of instant self-analysis was appropriate enough, given the saga. Sanders, the projected first-round pick who plummeted to the fifth round, finally got a chance to crack the lineup, given the concussion that sidelined fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. And for a quarterback who finally got some quality practice reps with the starters, due to the looming assignment, he made a pretty good statement about his potential.

The numbers don't leap off your fantasy scoresheet. Sanders barely completed half his passes (11 of 20, for 209 yards, with a TD, an INT and an 87.3 efficiency rating). The Browns tallied just 11 first downs under his command, which is what happens when you're 3-for-12 on third downs. And while his first NFL touchdown throw went for 66 yards, rookie running back Dylan Sampson did the heavy lifting, weaving and darting his way to paydirt after taking a swing pass in the flat.

1 / 12See Shedeur Sanders make first NFL career start for Cleveland BrownsCleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders passes against the Las Vegas Raiders in the first half at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nev. on Nov. 23, 2025.

Yet Sanders was ready for his big moment nonetheless, and he'll step right up as the buzz will surely intensify over the decision facing Browns coach Kevin Stefanski about which rookie quarterback starts when both are healthy.

After preseason 'competition,' Shedeur Sanders finally gets his chance at QB1

Sanders, the 42nd quarterback to start for the Browns since the franchise rebooted in 1999, became the first Browns rookie quarterback to win in his debut start since Eric Zeier in 1995. And he produced the two longest plays of the season for the Browns (3-8).

He didn't get a real crack when the competition was supposedly open during the summer. Perhaps he will get a shot now, considering the production he displayed with a week of dedicated preparation and the jolt of energy he brings as part of his package.

Not only did Sanders not wet his pants inside the giant Roomba-looking venue near The Strip, (ala Allegiant Stadium) he demonstrated what could make him special – as it did when he played for his father, Deion Sanders, at Colorado – as a playmaker. On a third-and-eight late in the first quarter, Sanders rolled away from a free blitzer coming up the middle and connected with Isaiah Bond on a 52-yard dime that set up the Quinshon Judkins 2-yard TD run that, with the conversion, made it 14-0.

As Stefanski put it, "I think you saw a lot of what Shedeur does well on the field today, to make that play off-schedule when we were outmanned in protection, to get the ball down the field."

Myles Garrett's brilliance finally rewarded in Browns win

It helped immensely that Sanders had the backing of one of the NFL's best defenses, led by the incomparable Garrett, who again showed why there's no debate that he's hurtling toward another NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.

Poor Geno Smith.

The Browns sacked Smith 10 times and Garrett collected three of the sacks to go with his two forced fumbles, six quarterback hits and four tackles for loss. Garrett broke his own single-season franchise record for sacks, leaving with 18, which leaves him five sacks shy of the all-time NFL record – with six games to play.

Still, the "best supporting" role for Sanders was significant enough. Think about the quarterback-needy teams that passed on Sanders, including the Raiders, who drafted running back Ashton Jeanty with the sixth pick overall. Las Vegas drafted wide receiver Jack Bech in the second round (58th overall), cornerback Darrien Porter (68th) early in the third round, plus four other prospects before Sanders was picked 144th overall.

Interestingly, former Raiders coach Antonio Pierce told CBS that had he still been in his previous position that he would have ensured that the team drafted Sanders – and he insisted that Raiders owner Mark Davis agreed with that position. Pierce, though, was replaced by Pete Carroll, aligned with new GM John Spytek, while Tom Brady consults.

Maybe Sanders just delivered some payback to the Raiders to start his revenge tour.

"I was a fifth-round pick," he said. "I got skipped by everybody. At least five times."

Hey, the revenge tour could take years.

To his credit, Sanders didn't play into that theme on Sunday.

"It just comes with the game," he said. "It is what it is. But I'm just thankful for where I am now. Everybody has their differences, but I still got an opportunity to play … The money's different, but thankfully, I have a good family."

From distraction to proud papa. Deion Sanders cheers on son's first win

Ah, the family. The video clip of Deion greeting Shedeur in the tunnel before the game went viral. In the days leading up to Sunday, Coach Prime didn't commit to making the trip from Colorado – where his Buffaloes fell to 3-8 with a home loss against Arizona State on Saturday night – but obviously was compelled to capture the moment.

After all, Shedeur made it back to Boulder during the Browns' bye week. And it's not every day that one of his sons makes his first NFL start.

No, Deion was anything but a distraction. During the game, the TV cameras caught him in a suite looking like any other proud father cheering on his son's biggest plays.

Still, the father-son connection, as beneficial as it is on many levels, was one of the residuals from the draft plummet for Shedeur as some decision-makers expressed uneasiness with the dynamic.

Time will tell whether that was a huge mistake in judgment by some NFL teams. To this point, though, it was part of the equation that resulted in Sanders falling way deeper in the draft than many in the NFL universe imagined and winding up as the "second" rookie quarterback on his team, buried deeper on the depth chart than he's ever been.

"That's how life is," Sanders said. "Everybody's not in the best situation, but it's no excuse. You've got to go out and perform. It's no choice. Nobody cares if this was one week of prep. Who cares?

"So, a lot of people want to see me fail. It ain't going to happen."

Haters or not, it merely must be proven over and over again.
