Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy identified the woman set on fire aboard a Chicago train as 26-year-old Bethany MaGee, who suffered severe burns in the attack.

Duffy blasted the city's lax crime policies, saying the attack, allegedly carried out by a career criminal with 72 prior arrests, never should have happened.

"It is devastating that a career criminal with 72 PRIOR ARRESTS is now accused of attacking 26-year-old Bethany MaGee on Chicago's L train and setting her on fire," Duffy said on X. "This would never have happened if this thug had been behind bars. Yet Chicago lets repeat offenders roam the streets.

"Chicago's carelessness is putting the American people at risk," he continued. "No one should ever have to fear for their lives on the subway."

Chicago Woman Set On Fire During Argument On Cta Train, Police Say

Authorities said the alleged attacker, 50-year-old Marcus Reed, has spent decades cycling through the criminal justice system and was out on bond at the time of the assault. Reed has been charged with committing a terrorist attack or violence against a mass transportation system, according to the criminal complaint.

Federal prosecutors allege that Reed intentionally used gasoline and a lighter to set MaGee on fire aboard a CTA Blue Line train at about 9:30 p.m. Monday.

U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois Andrew Boutros said the woman was "minding her own business and reading her phone" while seated in the middle of the train car when Reed approached her from behind, doused her head and body with gasoline, and tried to ignite the liquid.

The woman ran to the back of the car as he ignited the rest of the liquid in the bottle and then used it to light her on fire, according to the complaint.

Chicago Train Attack Suspect Ordered By Judge To Remain In Custody Ahead Of Trial

Video allegedly showed Reed watching the woman, engulfed in flames, as she tried to put out the fire by rolling on the floor.

Boutros said as the woman was rolling on the ground, desperately trying to put out the fire, no one came to her aid.

When the train stopped at Clark and Lake, the complaint noted the victim, who was still on fire, managed to exit before collapsing on the platform.

"When she finally stumbled down, two Samaritans came and put out the blaze that was all consuming her," Boutros said.

Chicago Train Fire Attack Shows Why 'Decarceration' Policies Are Putting Lives At Risk: Expert

She suffered severe burns to her face and body and remains in critical condition, according to authorities.

Prosecutors obtained photos showing Reed at a gas station about 20 minutes before the attack, where he was seen entering the store, paying the cashier and filling a small container with gasoline.

Other images showed Reed inside the train holding a flaming bottle as he approached the victim.

Reed allegedly exited the train after setting the woman on fire and walked away.

Chicago Person Of Interest In Train Fire Attack Has 22 Prior Arrests, Was Freed By Judge: Report

During Reed's first appearance in federal court Wednesday, he allegedly shouted, "I plead guilty, I plead guilty, I plead guilty."

U.S. Magistrate Judge Laura McNally asked him if he knew the maximum sentence was life in prison, to which he responded, "It's cool, it's cool, it's cool."

Following the hearing, ATF Special Agent in Charge Chris Amon commented on Reed's violent criminal history and pending cases, adding he "had no business being on the streets."

"Reed had plenty of second chances from the criminal justice system, and as a result, you have an innocent victim in the hospital fighting for her life," Amon said. "Because of the swift action of CPD, ATF and our law enforcement partners, there will be no other chances for Mr. Reed."

Blue City Suspect With Numerous Prior Arrests Federally Charged After Allegedly Setting Woman Ablaze On Train

McNally suggested a mental and medical evaluation, though Boutros noted Reed had not been declared mentally incompetent in connection with any of his prior charges.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Bond said Friday that Reed has spent 32 years cycling through the criminal justice system, beginning around age 18. He's been arrested 72 times and has eight felony and seven misdemeanor convictions.

Records show Reed has a lengthy criminal history, including a charge of felony aggravated arson from April 2020, after he allegedly started a fire at the Thompson Center, where Gov. J.B. Pritzker was holding a daily COVID-19 briefing.

He also faced misdemeanor battery charges for punching multiple women in the face, seemingly at random, and slapping a 42-year-old man in the face at the Halsted CTA Blue Line platform, FOX 32 Chicago reported.

In August, Reed was charged with aggravated battery after allegedly assaulting a woman at a psychiatric hospital, CWB Chicago reported. Despite prosecutors' request to keep him detained, he was released with an ankle monitor.

Macaulay Culkin's kids enjoy watching Home Alone with their dad, but they've yet to realize he's actually the lead of the beloved holiday film.

The former child star, 45, revealed during the Saturday, November 22, stop of his A Nostalgic Night With Macaulay Culkin tour that he watches the 1990 Christmas movie with his and fiancée Brenda Song's sons, Dakota, 4, and Carson, 3, "often," per People. Although the boys "really love" Home Alone, Culkin noted that it's a "completely different experience" seeing the film through their eyes.

"They have no idea that I'm Kevin," he shared, attributing his sons' oversight to their age.

"They're only 3 and 4 years old," he said, adding that he wants "to keep up that illusion as long as possible."

Culkin hinted that his eldest son is getting closer to discovering the truth, recounting a night when he put Dakota to bed "[and he] started asking questions about my siblings."

While subsequently showing his son an old family photo that included himself and his seven siblings, Dakota "immediately looks at me and goes, 'That kid looks like Kevin.'" Culkin brushed past Dakota's comment in an effort to keep his secret a bit longer.

Despite not realizing his close connection to the film's protagonist, Culkin shared that Dakota "thinks he's Kevin," recalling a conversation the father and son had about famous scenes from the movie.

"'Do you remember when you kicked burglars out?' And he's like, 'Yep.' 'You slide down the stairs?' 'I sure do.' I was like, 'You liar! That was me,'" Culkin quipped.

Culkin and his eldest son also like to recreate Kevin's dance moves from the film.

"Yeah, I do really love watching that movie with my boys," he gushed of bonding with his kids over his most iconic role.

Culkin famously portrayed Kevin McCallister — an 8-year-old who fends off robbers when his family accidentally leaves him behind during their Christmas vacation — in 1990's Home Alone. He reprised the character in the 1992 sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which saw Kevin encountering the bandits again when he got separated from his family on a trip. The films also starredJoe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard and Catherine O'Hara.

Earlier this month, Culkin stepped back into the role of Kevin in his "Home But Not Alone" ad campaign for Home Instead.

Bill Skarsgård's Pennywise on 'It: Welcome to Derry'

Warning: This article contains spoilers from It: Welcome to Derry episode 5, "29 Neibolt Street."

Pennywise is a stunt queen. The demon clown loves to make a dramatic entrance, and the same applies to HBO's It: Welcome to Derry.

Bill Skarsgård finally makes his debut as Pennywise on the Stephen King-inspired prequel series, now more than halfway through the first season.

In the fifth installment, titled "29 Neibolt Street" (named for the address of the haunted Well House that serves as an entrance to It's lair), little Matty Clements (Miles Ekhardt) stunned the new Loser's Club when he showed up in their secret clubhouse. He apparently survived that attack by the shapeshifting It entity in the premiere episode. The blow that sent his pacifier flying out the car window happened off camera, after all.

But no! He's very much dead. This Matty is It. The shape-shifting entity lures the kiddos into the sewers before revealing itself in the freakier form of Pennywise, officially welcoming Skarsgård back into the fold. Series creators Andy (director of the two It movies) and Barbara Muschietti (executive producer), and Jason Fuchs (co-showrunner) speak with Entertainment Weekly about savoring the fear by delaying the moment.

Bill Skarsgård's Pennywise debuts on 'It: Welcome to Derry'

"We decided that, in this season, Pennywise should be a little bit like the shark in Jaws," Barbara says. "You really want to be strategic. In both movies, it was very important for us to keep the mystery and the fear for this character alive. We find that familiarity is the enemy of that. So it was important for us to delay the pleasure, or the terror, as much as we could."

Andy calls it "a game of anticipation" to "get people in that state of, 'I need to see the clown! Where is it?!' That's what we would've liked as an audience. It's a bit of a slow burn."

Fuchs, who synced with the Muschiettis first as a co-producer and script revisionist for 2019's It Chapter Two, acknowledges the most exciting aspect of the entity is that it's a shapeshifter. "In the movies, there's only so much space to see those non-Pennywise manifestations of that creature," he says. "Because you're in TV...you get full episodes where you get to explore the other ways It is gonna torment these kids."

It's a game with the audience, as well. Fuchs points out that many viewers are now familiar with Skarsgård's Pennywise from the two movies and were waiting for his eventual re-emergence on the series.

"We went back and forth," Fuch says of the Pennywise planning. "We always knew this was not gonna be front and center in the first scene of the pilot in the way that It 1 opens with the introduction to Georgie and Pennywise. But a huge part of the creative process was, 'When do we introduce this character in the context of this story?' It really was a function, ultimately, of the story and the characters dictating it."

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, Fuchs compliments the actor behind the demon clown getup, teasing how "his performance goes to some unexpected places."

He says Skarsgård "has opportunities with this character that the story of the films did not present. Not only are you getting a really, hopefully, thrilling build-up to seeing Pennywise, you are also gonna see Bill doing things you've not seen him do in this character yet."

With just three episodes left, new installments of It: Welcome to Derry drop every Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET/PT, on HBO and HBO Max.

On Saturday, Nov. 22, Crow performed at the ACLU Creatives For Freedom concert in Brooklyn, where she was joined by several other artists for a "healing" group performance.

In a video from Saturday night's show, the 63-year-old singer was joined on stage by Maggie Rogers, St. Vincent, Taylor Meier of CAAMP, Mon Rovîa, Joy Oladokun and Ilana Glazer for a joyful singalong version of "If Makes You Happy." Crow released the popular track as the lead single off her 1996 self-titled album.

During the performance, Crow took the lead on the verses, while the other artists on stage—plus members of the audience—joined to belt out the chorus. In a clip of the performance posted to Instagram on Saturday, some of the artists could be seen with their arms around each other as they all swayed along to the catchy tune.

Another person who was at the concert wrote in the comments, "I was there and everyone on stage and in the crowd singing this was magical and healing ✨"

The official account for the ACLU also left a clever comment on the post, which read, "It makes us happy ❤️"

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — Jeeno Thitikul capped off her best year with the biggest payoff in women's golf, along with her place in the LPGA record book with the lowest scoring average in the tour's 75-year history.

As easy as she made it look Sunday with a four-shot victory in the CME Group Tour Championship, she has memories of the road not always being so smooth.

There was that four-putt finish to lose the Kroger Queen City Championship two months ago.

"I have the ice pack put in my eyes because I cried so bad," she said.

Then came a wrist injury last week from the firm turf at home in Dallas that left her uncertain if she could get through four rounds at Tiburon Golf Club in the season finale, much less win. She curtailed practice sessions to help.

"I think earlier in the week I just saying be able to finish four rounds of golf here just more than I could ask for already," she said. "But standing here with the trophy on Sunday, it's just like more than I really, really could ask for for sure."

Inside the ropes, she looked every bit as dominant as the No. 1 player in women's golf.

Staked to a six-shot lead over Nelly Korda going into the final day at Tiburon Golf Club, Thitikul held off an early challenge from Pajaree Anannarukarn with a pair of birdies early on the back nine and sailed home with a 4-under 68 and a second straight title in the CME Group Tour Championship.

That meant another check for $4 million, the largest in women's golf, pushing her season earnings to $7,578,300. That final birdie from 10 feet allowed her to break Annika Sorenstam's scoring record by the slimmest of margins — 68.681 for Thitikul, 68.697 for Sorenstam in 2002.

"I mean, like never, ever dreaming having that record at all," she said. "And then one time that I can be the lowest score average in my whole career should be really amazing."

What she didn't know was how close it got at one point Sunday.

Anannarukarn, playing in the group ahead of her fellow Thai, ran off five birdies in seven holes at the start to close the gap to two shots. It remained a two-shot lead going to the back nine.

But then Thitikul birdied the 10th and the 13th, and Anannarukarn dropped a shot at the par-3 12th. The lead was back to five shots and Thitikul was home free. She just didn't look at a leaderboard until she got to the par-5 17th, unaware that her Thai friend was on her heels.

Thitikul raised both arms when the final birdie dropped, and before long she was getting soaked with bubbly on the 18th green. Thitikul, who finished at 26-under 262, joined Jin Young Ko as the only back-to-back winners of the CME Group Tour Championship.

The victory also assured her winning LPGA player of the year, an outcome that was already decided because Women's British Open champion Miyu Yamashita would have had to win.

Korda, replaced by Thitikul at No. 1 in women's golf, became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2010 to go from seven wins in one season to none the following year.

She faced long odds at six shots behind to start the day and fell further back with one bogey and no birdies on the front nine. She holed out for eagle on No. 11 and shot 31 on the back a 68 to finish third. Korda still has the mixed-team Grant Thornton Invitational and the PNC Championship with her father next month.

Asked to describe the year, Korda said, "A grind."

"I feel like there was a lot of ups and downs and it made me grow a lot mentally, and I would say I'm just also very grateful for it because success is never linear," she said.

With the release of Wicked: For Good, many people are revisiting the first movie to freshen up. But, before you do that, you know what everyone really loves? When you interrupt a movie multiple times by sharing behind-the-scenes facts about it. So, to dazzle — and totally not annoy — your friends on your Wicked rewatch, here are 15 trivia tidbits about the first Wicked.

15 'Wicked' on Broadway

The full title of the original Wicked Broadway musical is Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz. The play's music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz. It premiered on May 28, 2003.

14 Before the Musical

The play is loosely based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. Both the play and this novel, of course, draw inspiration from the 1939 musical The Wizard of Oz and the original Oz books by L. Frank Baum.

13 The Unlikely Origin

Maguire said he was inspired to write the novel Wicked during the first Gulf War when he saw a newspaper headline comparing Saddam Hussein to Hitler. That motivated him to write a story about the nature of evil, which eventually led him to a story about the witches of Oz.

12 The Movie that Wasn't

According to Vanity Fair, before the musical, an adaptation of Maguire's novel began as a film with Demi Moore in the lead and Bob Zemeckis as director.

11 Whoopi Meets the Wizard?

Aside from Moore, several other actors expressed interest in playing Elphaba in this unrealized version, including Whoopi Goldberg, Claire Danes, Salma Hayek and Laurie Metcalf. Producer Suzanne Todd also pictured Michelle Pfeiffer, Emma Thompson and Nicole Kidman as possible leads.

10 The Musical's Origin

Separate from all the work in Hollywood on a Wicked adaptation, Broadway hitmaker Stephen Schwartz first heard about the book from his friend, singer Holly Near, who was reading it while the two were on vacation together. "I immediately had this epiphany that that was a great idea for a musical," Schwartz told Vanity Fair.

9 The Musical, Then the Movie

In time, Schwartz convinced Hollywood producer Marc Platt (who held the rights) to allow him to adapt Wicked into a stage musical first, with the prospect of a film somewhere down the line. Schwartz and writer Winnie Holzman continued tinkering, which gave Glinda the Good Witch a bigger role.

8 Why 'Wicked' Became a Musical

As explained in Vanity Fair, part of the reason why Wicked worked as a musical adaptation is that the novel was a first-person story that shared Elphaba's innermost thoughts and feelings. Non-musical movies struggle with that aspect storytelling, usually relying on voiceover. Musicals, however, allow the characters to sing their feelings, making their characters thoughts and motivations clear to the audience.

7 Before Erivo and Grande

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth were the first actors to play Elphaba and Glinda in the stage musical. The two would later make cameos in the 2024 film.

6 The Long Yellow Brick Road

One of the reasons why it took more than two decades for a film adaptation to follow the debut of the play is that box office sales for plays usually take a significant dip after there's a film version available.

5 One Play = Two Movies

Early on it was decided that, to properly adapt the stage musical, it would take two films instead of just one. As Schwartz told Collider, "We ultimately decided to do two movies because we couldn't get it all crammed into one movie without, we felt, really compromising the story. We thought no one wanted to sit for four hours and see one movie, so it got divided into two movies."

4 Two Movies = One Production

Both films were shot simultaneously by director Jon M. Chu, who switched back and forth between Wicked and Wicked: For Good throughout production.

3 Live from Oz, it's Saturday Night

Originally, Bowen Yang wasn't going to appear in Wicked due to his Saturday Night Live schedule, but Ariana Grande called Lorne Michaels and convinced him to allow Yang to do the movie.

2 A Wicked Misprint

In November 2024, Wicked dolls were pulled from toy shelves because they listed an adult site on the packaging.
