Spoiler alert! We're discussing minor plot details about "The Wizard of Oz" prequel "Wicked: For Good" (in theaters now).
Dorothy is definitely not in Kansas anymore.
After meeting the college-age witches of Oz in last year's "Wicked," the musical sequel "Wicked: For Good" is finally crossing timelines with "The Wizard of Oz," showing how the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion all came to be.
The new movie also brings Dorothy into the fold, although we never actually get to see the Kansas farmgirl's face. Instead, the film only ever shows her silhouette or side profile, as Glinda (Ariana Grande) sees her off from Munchkinland and Dorothy confronts the green-skinned Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) at her castle.

The "Wicked" stage musical handles the character similarly, in that theatergoers only ever get a peek of Dorothy's shadow at a pivotal moment. Moviegoers will get a slightly better glimpse – with shots of her pigtails and jeweled slippers – although the most they will ever hear from her are distant cries in later scenes.
In adapting the musical for the big screen, "there was never a temptation to show more of Dorothy," screenwriter Winnie Holzman says. "That would have taken me right out of the movie." To most audiences, "Dorothy is Judy Garland at age 16 (in the original film), so it's never going to look quite 'right.' "
Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) finds the wreckage of Dorothy's Kansas farmhouse in Munchkinland in "Wicked: For Good."
Plus, Holzman adds, there's no need to show Dorothy in "Wicked" because she's "on the periphery" of this particular Oz story, which centers on the unlikely friendship between Elphaba and Glinda.
"Dorothy is a pawn; she's being used," Holzman says. "We're focusing on the story that you haven't heard before."
Who is the actress that plays Dorothy in 'Wicked: For Good'?
For months, "Wicked" fans on social media have speculated wildly about who might be playing Dorothy, with rumors including rising pop singer Madison Beer and "Matilda: The Musical" star Alisha Weir.

Instead, it's relative unknown Bethany Weaver, a choreographer and actress making her movie debut. Coincidentally, back in 2022, Weaver posted a video to Instagram of her singing "The Wizard and I" from the musical, with the caption: "Aggressively manifesting that one day I will be in 'Wicked!' "
"She auditioned for us by doing shadow play, so she knows movement," director Jon M. Chu explains of her casting.

Chu worked closely with costume designer Paul Tazewell and the hair and makeup team to create a Dorothy that evoked the iconic figure we all know, but also made her distinct to this musical's universe.
For copyright reasons, they couldn't give Dorothy ruby slippers as in the 1939 movie, so they instead went back to the silver shoes referenced in L. Frank Baum's 1900 book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and W.W. Denslow's illustrations. The same applied to her outfit.
"We stayed classic with our references," Chu says. "It may not be the blue gingham dress that people know, but it's a (similar) blue pattern to the one in the L. Frank Baum books."
